Lipstick Hippie Chick

One of my favorite Joseph Pilates quotes goes like this, “The acquirement and enjoyment of physical well-being, mental calm, and spiritual peace are priceless to their possessors if there be any such so fortunate living among us today”.   It is my thought that living in an environment full of chemicals, synthetics, and health hazards in everything from our cosmetics, to our food, to our cleaning supplies can make it rather difficult, if not impossible, to achieve the trifecta of requisites for healthy, happy living.  Too much junk really muddies the path to health and happiness.

In my quest to live a life in which I feel as on top of the world and as over the moon as I possibly can, I have purged so much garbage from my food, my cleaning products, my personal care products, and my beauty products.  I cannot tell you how much better I feel physically, mentally, and spiritually.  Goodbye petrochemicals, phthalates, parabens, artificial flavors & preservatives, nitrates & nitrites, synthetic fragrances, and toxic chemicals.  Hello clean food & Makeup, essential oils, and natural cleaning agents.   If all this talk conjures up images of a patchouli scented, makeup-less, tie dyed hippie in a VW Van, think again.  Although there is nothing wrong with the vision of said image, that just isn’t me.   This gal absolutely appreciates fashion, lipstick, a clean home, and delicious food.  I’ve totally seen the light….ALL of these are attainable in a more natural and far more healthy way.

You may be wondering at this point, “Why the epiphany?”.   I can give you a one word answer: CANCER.   After my battle with breast cancer, I started paying closer and closer attention to the things I put in my body, on my body, and around my body…..and the same for my family…..my children.  The more research I did, the deeper I realized the rabbit hole went.  The incidence for many cancers, especially pediatric cancers, is on the rise.  There is a lack of emphasis on environmental research as a primary means for cancer prevention.  Did you know that only a few hundred of the EIGHTY THOUSAND chemicals produced in the United States have been tested for safety?  (2008-2009 Annual Report President’s Cancer Panel)  That is so frightening to me! So many chemicals must have deleterious effects on our bodies, which is why I feel so strongly about eliminating as many as possible from my life…and I encourage you to follow suit.  I think you will be amazed by how much better you feel physically when you eliminate  damaging substances from your life.  Don’t sweat it, though.  Start small…with one area of your life…let your new lease on life evolve over time.  And I promise, you can keep your lipstick!
